Board games!
If you’ve ever been to a boring holiday party or wondered what a good gift would be to teach your friends about finance, today’s guests have the answers! Doug & Shelly Garrett (Garrett’s Games and Geekiness podcast) join Joe in the basement to talk all things board games.
First we discuss three good holiday picks to give as gifts. Don’t worry, we’ll give you a range from easy (for that fun-loving friend) to complex (for the strategic thinker in the family). These games aren’t meant to “teach” as much as they’re fun games to whet your friends/family member’s appetite for business, finance and economics.
Then Doug & Shelly share their favorite games to play with the family during the holidays. Want some frugal fun? Most of these cost less than $50 and you’ll find hours and hours of enjoyment in these packages.
Think most board games are like Monopoly? You’ll be surprised by today’s show.

I’m a big fan of Dixit: more fun than similar games like Apples to Apples (not funny enough) or Cards Against Humanity (too soul crushing).
Our newest favorite is Lords of Waterdeep. Super nerdy, in all the right ways.

Believe it or not, we had trouble getting the family to play Dixit this year even though in the past they’ve always enjoyed it. We played it (four of us) and had a great time….but it wasn’t as well-attended as the annual poker challenge (won by, of all people, my mom) or our new game Viticulture. My favorite of the holiday was Railroad Tycoon. We had an epic game of that.
I like Cards Against Humanity, but only with certain people who understand subtlety. I can’t stand people who spend the whole game going, “My cards suck!” because they’re looking for one of the five obvious winners in the deck. I can explain 500 times that you create funny….and they still bitch. So, CAH doesn’t come out much at our house.
